COMPLETION OF PYLON FOUNDATION PILES AT CEBU CORDOVA BRIDGE

The construction of the piles for one of the cable-stayed bridge towers included in the Cebu Cordova Link Expressway Project in Cebu (Philippines) has been completed. This foundation consists of 21 piles of 2.5m diameter with a total length of 59m, the magnitude of which can be seen in the following images. The construction of the pile cap is now in progress using an innovative method involving the use of precast elements connected to the piles steel casing. FHECOR was appointed to undertake the Independent Checking Engineering of the bridges included in the whole project, which are currently under construction by the joint venture formed by ACCIONA Infraestructuras, First Balfour and DM Consunji. The design has been performed by SENER and Carlos Fernández Casado (CFCSL), and it includes a cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 390m with single towers placed in the centerline of the bridge and a concrete deck with a total width of almost 27m. One of the main challenges for the design of the bridge is the heavy wind forces produced by the typhoons which are relatively frequent in the region together with the existence of significant seismic actions. The project is financed and promoted by the Cebu Cordova Link Expressway Corporation (CCLEC) and is expected to be completed by mid-2021. Connecting Cebu City and Cordova, the bridge is meant to be an alternate route to the Mactan Cebu International Airport, serving at least 40,000 vehicles daily. (Images courtesy of CLJV)
