The new Virilla river bridge in Costa Rica National Route 32 opened to traffic on September 2nd. The bridge project and construction contracts have been managed by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). This role was commissioned to UNOPS by the Costa Rican Government Road Agency CONAVI. The bridge is 285 m long and its deck 14,3 m wide. The main span is 129.75 m so that the piers position matches those in the existing parallel bridge. Most of the deck box girder has been erected by balanced cantilever construction. The design was developed by FHECOR and GINPROSA back in 2016. Structural design supervision was commissioned to Arup. MECO and PUENTES teamed up to for the construction consortium. FHECOR has advised UNOPS in structural and construction engineering, mainly related with balanced cantilever precamber prediction and construction geometry. High seismic demand in the region has been the project most relevant and complex aspect, as the road administration expected to minimize future ordinary conservation costs and therefore requested not to use special seismic devices to dissipate seismic energy.
