In 2017 the Gipuzskoa Provincial Council engaged a joint venture formed by SESTRA and FHECOR to design a new bike path connecting Azitain and Maltzaga. Construction works were later bid in two parts, the second of which was awarded to CAMPEZO-IZA-ESTRUMAR and includes two pedestrian bridges with spans of approximately 80 m. The proposed design is a beam-arch hybrid and a U-section formed by two haunched steel box girders of variable depth, in which the outer web is folded inward to achieve a slimmer appearance in elevation and to avoid internal web stiffeners. Last Friday the first of the two footbridges was lifted successfully into place, despite several challenging factors, including close proximity to railroad tracks, the presence of piers supporting highways AP-1 and AP-8, and the steep incline of the Ego riverbanks. Moreover, the project´s close proximity to overheard motorways required crossing the Ego riverbed at a severe skew. Lifting of the second footbridge is scheduled for July 10th.
