IABSE 2023 AWARD FOR THE CEBU BRIDGE (PHILIPPINES)

11/2023

Last November 8, the IABSE 2023 award in the category of Innovation in Construction was presented in Zurich to the Cebu Bridge project. This award is comparable to the Nobel Prize or the Oscar for great bridges awarded by the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE).
FHECOR performed the independent check of the main cable-stayed bridge as well as the other bridges included in the project.
The Cebu cable-stayed bridge is the longest in the Philippines at 650 meters long with a central span of 390 meters between the pylons, with a concrete deck almost 27 meters wide supported by a single line of cables in its central axis. It also included the construction of several viaducts, as well as a 5.2-kilometer-long section of roadway over an embankment.
This region of the Philippines has a high risk of typhoons and potential earthquakes, so the dimensions of the bridge made the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) a challenging project, with great technical and logistical complexity for its construction.
The bridge was commissioned in April 2022. The engineering and design work for the bridges was carried out by CARLOS FERNANDEZ CASADO and SENER, and the construction work was carried out by the joint venture ACCIONA Infraestructuras, First Balfour and D.M. CONSUNJI, INC.
