José Antonio Grinán inaugurates the new bridge over the River Guadalquivir in Montoro

07/2009

The President of the Regional Government of Andalusia, José Antonio Grinán, presided the opening of the new Montoro Bridge (Cordoba) over the River Guadalquivir in the aforementioned locality. This bridge shall ease both pedestrian and road traffic into the town center from the Adamuz A-3000 road.

According to a press release from the Regional Government, this new infrastructure has supposed an investment of some €7.4 million and is located in an area known as the Vaguada de La Paloma. It has subsequently improved the access to the city center which until that moment only counted on the old Donadas Bridge as the sole access way.

Both bridges shall be connected by an avenue, called “via-parque” (park way) so-named as a result of its environmental characteristics and shall run along the right-hand bank of the River Guadalquivir and is thought to be a public thoroughfare for the local neighbors. The left-hand bank, on the other hand, shall be reconditioned and regenerated by the local Council to convert it into the Paseo de la Ribera (the Riverbank Public Footpath).

The city of Montoro which is set on one of the bends of the River Guadalquivir is declared as a site of historic and artistic interest and has great touristic potential hence the special attention given to the design of the bridge.

The whole project has placed great importance for the pedestrian, and as a result the bridge has two wide pavements and where the details and the conception have been studied thoroughly. As with the “via-parque”, a bicycle lane, a rest area and an observation deck are included.

The bridge is 200m in length and is crowned by a steel arch. The deck is 16.3m in width and incorporates a lane in each direction, a central reservation and 3m wide pedestrian walkways on each side.

The new access way works shall conclude with the remodeling of the Adamuz road on its stretch between the two bridges, creating the area of the aforementioned “via-parque”. This particular infrastructure has a lane in each direction plus a 2.5m wide sidewalk which overlooks the river, along with a bicycle lane. Halfway along this stretch, an observation point has been installed which offers a stunning view over the River Guadalquivir.

As a result of the bridge’s inauguration, the Public Works and Transport Ministry and the Montoro Local Council have organized “pedestrian days”, which shall allow the neighbors to visit the new infrastructures, crossing over the bridge itself which has been garlanded with informative panels. The days shall end with the lighting up of the bridge at 10.00pm, whilst the vehicle traffic shall be able to use this new access way as from 12.00am tomorrow, Saturday.
