The 'Insular' Athletics Center selected in the MOMA Art Gallery.

07/2005

The ‘Insular’ Athletics Center, designed by Tenerife Architects Felipe Artengo, Fernando Martín and José María Rodríguez Pastrana, has been selected as an example of contemporary Spanish architecture, which was inaugurated in February 2006 at the Modern Art Museum in New York (MoMA).

The structure, which is currently being built in the area of Tíncer, under the coordination of the architect Mariola Merino (MP Arquitectos), will be exhibited along with another 35 projects currently under construction or on the point of being finished.
In this case, the Athletics Stadium shall be finished next year, after the Works began in mid-2004.

The construction of the Stadium arose as a result of the Project winning the competition for Preliminary Projects, which was organized in 1997 by the Autonomous Sports Organism pertaining to the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Town Hall.

According to the Project Report, the integration into the urban surroundings, the demands of the north-north-east orientation for the athletics track, the sheer size of a space with these characteristics and the importance of the spectators’ vision were fundamental conditions in the proposal. Also, taking advantage of the topography of the landsite, the perimeter stands are able to be prolonged following the natural steps of the land, which circles and protects the athletics track.
