REHABILITATION OF THE JÁNDULA RIVER BRIDGE IN ANDUJAR, JAÉN

06/2020

Designed and built 115 years ago, the steel bridge over the Jándula River in Spain’s Andalucia region is a piece of structural art. Following four months of emergency repairs and rehabilitation, the bridge reopens today to normal traffic. AZUL served as general contractor for the € 1.2 million repair project.
Emergency works to restore this truss bridge were ordered by the Andalucia regional government in response to the results of a December 2019 inspection, in which elements of the bridge deck were found to be in a critical condition. The repair program not only restored the integrity of the bridge deck, but also upgraded the steel truss elements to meet current code requirements.
The repair and rehabilitation project consisted of detouring traffic to a shallow crossing downstream of the bridge, removing and replacing the existing bridge deck with a new concrete deck, strengthening of truss chords and web members (enabling a potential widening of the bridge), rehabilitation of support bearings, abrasive blast cleaning and recoating of steel elements.
FHECOR Ingenieros Consultores designed the repair project and provided technical assistance during construction.
